Bihar Assembly election LIVE updates: Cong. poll panel will meet on Oct. 8 to select candidates

In a sharp escalation of tensions within Bihar’s Opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance, the CPI(ML) on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) categorically rejected the offer of 19 seats made by the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) for the upcoming Assembly elections, branding it an attack on CPI(ML)‘s dignity.

In 2020, too, the CPI(ML) had contested 19 seats, winning 12 of them. Citing this strike rate, which was better than both RJD and the Congress, the CPI(ML) had been seeking at least 40 of the 243 seats in the Bihar assembly. The RJD contested 144 seats and won 75, while the Congress contested 70 seats and won only 19.

The Congress’ Central Election Committee will meet on October 8 to decide its candidates for the assembly polls in Bihar next month, sources said.

The party’s top leadership’s deliberations come even as seat sharing talks with its allies RJD and Left parties are on. The Congress is not leaving anything to chance and thus the early selection of candidates, party insiders said.
